What is International Women's Day?
Celebrated annually on March 8, International Women’s Day recognizes the achievements of women past, present and future. It is an opportunity to inspire women to achieve their fullest potential, raise awareness about critical women’s issues and create an opportunity to unite and mobilize for meaningful change. International Women’s Day 2011 will continue with the 2010 theme of ‘Mentoring Future Women Leaders.’
Founding chair Jo Ling Kent has been hosting an annual International Women’s Day Benefit since 2006 in various locations around the world. Our mission in Beijing is to raise awareness about the daily challenges that women and girls face living in China. On Friday, March 11th, we will be hosting a cocktail benefit comprised of a silent auction, keynote speakers, networking and women-to–women mentorship opportunities. For the second year in a row, IWD will benefit Teach For China (http://www.chinaeducationinitiative.org) to foster a dialogue about education inequality in China and support the empowerment of young women in academics.

About the Mentor Lunch Series 2011
To honor our mentorship theme for International Women’s Day 2011, the
silent auction will feature a series of one-on-one mentoring lunches
with prominent and successful women and men from diverse professional
backgrounds in Beijing.
Research consistently shows that women and men who have mentors –
regardless of background, age or educational attainment – are more
likely to achieve their personal and professional goals in whatever
field they choose to pursue. The sharing of experiences with someone a
few steps ahead yields eye-opening benefits for both the mentor and
the mentored.
In addition to promoting mentorship in the field with TFC and its
teaching fellows, IWD 2011 aims to help build strong professional
relationships and mentorship among those who attend this year’s
benefit, both among women and men. The purpose of each Mentor Series
lunch is to foster an open, friendly conversation with an individual
who has encountered great success, overcome challenges and made major
decisions in a field that interests the silent auction bidder. There
are no gender restrictions. We encourage everyone to bid.
Lunches for the Mentor Lunch series have been generously donated by
Maison Boulud, Capital M, CRU, Hilton Wangfujing, among others.
They may be used for lunch or dinner. All proceeds from the Mentor
Series Silent Auction will benefit TFC.
